Exam Pattern

The WBCS 2024 exam has three stages. Each stage tests different things like your knowledge, thinking skills, and personality. You have to do well in all stages to be selected for the civil service jobs.

  1. Preliminary Exam:
    • The Prelims is a written test that you do with a pen and paper.
    • You will get a General Studies question paper with 200 multiple-choice questions. The total marks are 200 and you get 2.5 hours to finish it.
    • If you mark a wrong answer, you lose 1/4 mark. So you have to be careful.
    • The Prelims is a qualifying exam. If you pass, you can go to the Mains.
  2. Mains Exam:
    • The Mains has six compulsory papers. Each paper is for 200 marks and 3 hours long. They test you on many different subjects.
    • If you are applying for Group A & B jobs, you also have to take two optional papers. Each optional paper is also for 200 marks and 3 hours long.
    • The Mains has both multiple-choice and descriptive type questions. They check your knowledge and how well you can write.
  3. Personality Test:
    • The last stage is an interview. Here they see what kind of personality you have.
    • The Personality Test has 200 marks for Group A & B, 150 marks for Group C, and 100 marks for Group D. This is because different job groups need different qualities.

Syllabus

The syllabus for the WBCS exam covers many subjects. You have to study all of these to do well in the Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test.

  • Prelims: The General Studies paper in Prelims includes English Language, General Science, Current Affairs, History & Geography of India, Indian Polity & Economy, and General Mental Ability. They test how much you know about all these topics.
  • Mains:
    • The Mains has compulsory papers on English, Bengali/alternative language, General Studies, Constitution & Economy, and Arithmetic & Reasoning. These test your language skills, general knowledge, understanding of government and economy, and how you solve problems.
    • If you are applying for Group A & B jobs, you also have to choose one optional subject and take two papers on that. This lets you show that you are an expert in that subject.
  • Personality Test: The interview checks how alert and smart you are, how well you can think and explain your thoughts, if you can judge things fairly, if you have different interests, if you can work well with others and lead a team, and if you are honest and have good values. They see if you will be a good fit for a civil service job.
